Venice Arts seeks a practicing animator and arts educator to teach and lead its Digital Animation program for 14-18 year old youth. Digital Animation is a multi–disciplinary workshop that integrates diverse forms of animation from fine art to cartoons, to provide students with foundation knowledge in animation with an emphasis on non-fiction storytelling, while exploring both experimental and traditional forms of animation. Instructor should have both historical and contemporary knowledge of animation. Over the course of the session, students should express themselves through the completion of multiple forms of animated projects—from zoetropes, flipbooks, stop-motion, cutout animation to projects created using computer animation software.
About Venice Arts
Venice Arts is a non-profit arts organization whose mission is to ignite youths’ imagination, mentor their creativity, and expand their sense of possibility through high quality, accessible media–based arts education programs. Venice Arts also serves as a catalyst for people of all ages, living in low–income or underrepresented communities, to create and share personal and community stories through photography, film, multi–media and visual arts. Terms Instructors are independent contractors who are paid a fixed rate of $3,120 for workshops taught over a 22–week period (with a 6-week break from mid-December until February). Each workshop is 3 hours long and meets on Saturday afternoons.
Working on a contract basis, the Lead Artist for Digital Animation is responsible for:
• Building lesson plans that support the learning goals identified by Venice Arts
• Nurturing volunteer artists, who work as educators and mentors in the classroom
• Managing the class, including identifying the need for equipment and supplies and communicating about behavioral, attendance, or other problems
• Assuring a quality presentation of youth work for the spring culminating event and for features on the web
Qualifications
The ideal artist for this workshop is an animation arts educator who works comfortably across multiple disciplines. Experience teaching youth in this age group (14-18 years old), and honoring them as young artists/creators is required. An understanding of Visual and Performing Art Standards is a strong plus, as is experience developing art education lesson plans. Must be able to both lead and work as a member of a teaching team.
