With Louis E. Greenwald, Esq.
In this workshop, we will discuss typical provisions in artist/gallery
consignment agreements and public art contracts. We will cover common
contract clauses, while focusing on ways to avoid pitfalls and common
mistakes. We will also go over strategies for negotiating the best
possible deal. You will learn how to review and analyze artist/gallery
consignment agreements and public art contracts, how to make sense of
any legalese, and how to make sure you do not sign something you will
later regret.
JUNE 25, 2011: DESIGN PATENT LAW FOR VISUAL ARTISTS AND FASHION
DESIGNERS
With James Juo, Esq. and Scott Hansen, Esq.
Design patents protect the look of products, from designer shoes to
movie merchandise, sports cars to tire rims, and can even include what
appears on your computer screen. Aesthetic design can be as important as
its functionality when it comes to commercializing a product. This
workshop will provide a brief overview of design patents, and compare
design patents with trademark and copyright protection.
JULY 9, 2011: COPYRIGHT & LICENSING FOR VISUAL ARTISTS: MONETIZING YOUR
RIGHTS
With Alexandra Darraby, Esq.
We'll start by demystifying the Ten Biggest Myths About Copyright, and
then proceed to focus on practical explanations for artists and
galleries on the following issues: what copyright ownership really
means, what monetizing a copyright means, how to license a copyright,
and business strategies and pros and cons of licensing. We'll also
discuss what happens when you post your copyrighted work on the
Internet—have you exposed your copyright to foreign territory where
American copyright law does not apply, and, if so, what are the
ramifications? What are courts saying about "publication" in the
web world?
