Rogue Artists Ensemble is hiring a writer to adapt Zen Shorts
Date: August 14th, 2011
Rogue Artists Ensemble is seeking a collaborative writing partner for our new all-ages
production Zen Shorts, based on the book written and illustrated by John J Muth.
About the Project:
The Rogues are looking to collaborate with a writer to adapt Zen Shorts into an all-ages show,
geared towards students between 3rd and 6th grade. The show will be an energetic take on the
original Caldecott winning book while embracing it's Zen approach to the world. The Rogue's
adaptation will set the story in a more urban landscape and transport audiences to fantastic
imaginative worlds through the telling of the Zen stories. This original adaptation will
incorporate puppets, masked characters, video projection and an original score to create a
completely unique experience for audiences.
The Rogues are looking for a strong individual take on the story and script elements. We are not
looking for an exact retelling, as the play can include elements from any of the books in Muth's
series, along with other other Zen parables.
This project will premiere in Costa Mesa at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in February 2012
with a run in Los Angeles currently being planned soon after.
Qualifications:
- Writer able to collaborate with a group to create a text / blueprint in which a production
will be based.
- Creative, out of the box thinker, able to take the uncharted path and work collaboratively to
figure it out.
- An artist who has a love for alternative arts, puppetry, use of technology, media
- Knowledgeable in Eastern Cultures and an interest in Zen Buddhism.
- Los Angeles based artists are preferable as face to face meetings will be required
